Reading Material

“The best thing for being sad," replied Merlin, beginning to puff and blow, "is to learn something. That's the only thing that never fails. You may grow old and trembling in your anatomies, you may lie awake at night listening to the disorder of your veins, you may miss your only love, you may see the world about you devastated by evil lunatics, or know your honor trampled in the sewers of baser minds. There is only one thing for it then — to learn. Learn why the world wags and what wags it. That is the only thing which the mind can never exhaust, never alienate, never be tortured by, never fear or distrust, and never dream of regretting. Learning is the only thing for you. Look what a lot of things there are to learn.”

.H. White, The Once and Future King

The following is a recommended reading list in APA format that covers Psychedelics, Evolution, and their intersection. My interest in both psychedelics and evolution spans two decades. As a teen, the idea that a chemical substance could radically alter one’s perception was astounding. I also saw evolution as the over-arching narrative of human existence. Our evolutionary story, as put forward by great thinkers like cosmologist Brian Swimme, starts at the Big Bang and moves through us in each moment. The sociologist Robert Bellah, after fifty decades of research, points out in his work Religion and Human Evolution that “evolution. . . is the only shared metanarrative among educated people of all cultures that we have.” Ken Wilber, the Integral philosopher, has created a comprehensive framework for the evolution of the cosmos that includes consciousness. This is the framework through which I have approached psychedelics. As the work of Terence and Dennis McKenna has put forward, psychedelics maybe the missing element explaining the emergence of humanity. Decades of science supports this theory. My dissertation, and forthcoming book, presents this line of thinking. The following is the material I used for my work. I hope this list of resources makes it easier for other people to continue their research. The first column focuses on psychedelic and the second on evolution. Evolution in this context includes cosmological, collective, and psychological evolution.
